The jewel of the Basque coast
Lekeitio is an old fishing town on the Basque coast, located between the foothills of Mount Lumentza and Mount Otoio. To the South of the town, the mouth of the Lea river forms an impressive bay containing Isuntza beach and the island of San Nicolás, which can be reached on foot at low tide.
There are many reasons why this is one of the most frequently recommended spots in the province of Vizcaya to enjoy a few days of sun and sand.

History
Lekeitio has always been a traditional fishing village. Although today it thrives mainly on tourism, there is no shortage of restaurants serving fine fish and seafood.
Maritime transport was also one of the village’s main sources of income, and old, disused boatyards can still be seen today at the mouth of the Lea river.
The townspeople were famous as whalers back in the times when there were still whales in the Cantabrian Sea. This tradition is reflected today in the town's shield.
The town traditionally produced excellent sailors, and its residents became part of history when at least three sailors from Lekeitio sailed with Christopher Columbus on his voyage discovering the Americas in 1492.
